The 50 Street Redevelopment Project upgrades 50 Street from Lakeshore Drive to 48 Avenue. Upgrades include new infrastructure (road surface), underground infrastructure (utilities), sidewalks, and landscaping. All downtown businesses in the 50 Avenue Redevelopment construction area are open. CN Rail completed the railway crossing upgrades. The project has three phases running from 2023 to 2027. There is a planned two year break for 2025 and 2026.

When: Phases

  • Phase 1 and 2, COMPLETE: 2013 - 2024
  • Phase 2 part 2: 2025. Builds on previous work
  • Planned break: 2026 - 2026. Regardless of start time, there is a planned two year break between Phase 2 and 3
  • Phase 3: Tentatively starting in 2027

    Phase 2 part 2

    Completed

    • Concrete, first level of asphalt, line painting, and signage
    • Fortis installed the streetlights along 50 Avenue
    • CN Rail intersection upgrades including preparation of the pedestrian crossing at the railway along the east side of 50 Street
    • Remove old asphalt, concrete curbs, and sidewalks
    • Install underground wiring conduit for the new traffic signals
    • Excavate and install a new gravel structure to provide a base for a new asphalt road surface
    • Install new curbs and gutters
    • Install new sidewalks
    • Pave the road with asphalt
    • Reconstruction of the intersection at 50 Avenue and Centennial Street
      • Install a new asphalt walking path on the east side of the intersection
      • Landscaping
      • CN Rail and Fortis are also working on upgrades
      • Install traffic lights. Scheduled for the end of November. We turn them on in the spring of 2025. First, CN must remove, replace, and upgrade their equipment so the traffic signals can coordinate with the rail crossing signals
      • Traffic lights turn on

    • We are working on fine tuning the traffic lights to work together to reduce congestion, including the traffic lights at:
      • Centennial Street and 50 Avenue
      • Lakeshore Drive and Centennial Street, including changing the intersection to a scramble style crossing
      • 48 Avenue and Centennial Street
    • We are working to halt any construction for the busy summer months
    • We hope to wrap up construction this year for the 2026 construction break, resuming in 2027

      • Some water and sewer mains are over forty years old
      • Save money by upgrading landscaping and sidewalks at the same time as the road

    • Modernize the road and calm traffic, while reducing construction impacts
    • Help tourism and business by giving a facelift to this important downtown corridor
