The Northeast Gateway Water Supply Main project is designed to improve water quality in Sylvan Lake. This is part of a long-term water sustainability project for the community, as directed by the 2020 Water Master Plan. It will enhance system reliability and how treated water gets to Lakers. All the work being performed has been and continues to be discussed and shared with the province, County of Red Deer, and CN Rail to ensure we continue to meet their requirements. This work includes:
Installing a second water supply main that ties to the North Reservoir
Assessing the old water main to plan for future enhancements
Why?
Reducing our dependency on the existing water supply main
Increasing water supply capacity to the lower zone
Enhancing the north water supply main will ensure long-term sustainability for future cost savings
Increasing the life cycle of the north water supply system
Where?
The project begins at the North Reservoir and follows Township Road 391 to Range Road 12 (30 Street), ending at Cuendet Industrial Way
Stage 1 - September 2025 to December 2025: Contract Tendering & Financial Approval (Complete)
Stage 2 - Estimated February 2026 to December 2026: Construction
Stage 3 - Estimated Fall 2026 to Fall 2027: Remediation
How does this impact residents, and what do you need to know?
Water service will remain active throughout the project
Access to residents and businesses will be maintained at all times
Traffic will be reduced to one lane while passing active construction sites
Detour routes will be implemented at times when full road closures are required
The new supply main will extend the life of the system and prepare the community for long term needs
No changes to water quality are anticipated, and all work is conducted under strict regulatory and operational controls
The hours of construction shall be from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM Monday to Saturday. Sunday work and evening work may also be required as weather and schedule requirements dictate.

When we talk about "improving water quality" for this project, we are talking about System Integrity and Reliability. This project is not a change to the chemical treatment, "softness," or mineral composition of your water. It is an investment in the infrastructure that delivers that water to your home.
Strengthening our Water Network
The Northeast Gateway project is the essential step in our larger 2020 Water Master Plan. It serves as a higher-capacity second connection to our water distribution system for our community. By completing this main now, we create the operational redundancy required to perform enhancements at the South Reservoir.
By installing this second supply main, we are ensuring:
System resilience: This new line allows us to take other parts of the system, like water wells, offline for vital upgrades and maintenance without interrupting your service or compromising safety.
Consistent delivery: We are reducing the risk of service interruptions or pressure drops in the "lower zone," ensuring water stays moving and fresh.
Increased flow: A healthier network means better circulation throughout the Town, ensuring treated water meets strict regulatory standards from the reservoir to your tap.
Long-term sustainability: As Sylvan Lake grows, this infrastructure ensures our system can handle increased demand while continuing to meet all provincial health and safety requirements.
