We are upgrading 47 Avenue from Highway 20 to the west access to Walmart, including:

  • Road widening to a 4 lane divided roadway
  • Traffic signals at the intersection of 47 Avenue and Iron Gate Boulevard / Thevenaz Industrial Trail
  • All surrounding businesses are open during construction via detours

Why

  • To improve safety and traffic flow

When

  • July 16 - 21: Building detour routes
  • July 21 - October 31: Weather permitting. Construction work will primarily be conducted between 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday

We're listening

Since the project started we've heard from many Lakers, so we’ve made some changes to the detour route:

  • Changed traffic signal timing at 47 Avenue and Cuendet/Herder Drive intersections to improve traffic movements
  • Added more directional signage along the detour route
  • Added more information signs to tell people businesses are open around the construction site
  • Better secured the area to prevent vehicles from making short cuts through private properties
  • Created a more visible and safer pedestrian crossing zone through the construction area

    Traffic lights vs a roundabout

The Town chose traffic lights instead of a roundabout. A roundabout was less desirable for three main reasons:

    1. Major utility work: There are two Fortis power transformers that would need to be moved, which is a large and expensive job.

    1. Much higher cost: A roundabout could cost up to $2 million more than we planned for, not counting the extra costs for land, lighting, and moving gas and power lines. While we build roundabouts as often as we can, this one would stretch the budget too far. The extra costs of this roundabout would take away money from other planned projects.

    1. Time and business impact: This intersection needs work now. A roundabout would take years to build, while a traffic light is relatively quick to install. Roundabout construction would also be more disruptive to nearby businesses.

In short: traffic lights are quicker, cheaper, and cause less disruption in this case.
