We are upgrading 47 Avenue from Highway 20 to the west access to Walmart, including:

  • Road widening to a 4 lane divided roadway
  • Traffic signals at the intersection of 47 Avenue and Iron Gate Boulevard / Thevenaz Industrial Trail
  • All surrounding businesses are open during construction via detours

Why

  • To improve safety and traffic flow

When

  • July 16 - 21: Building detour routes
  • July 21 - October 31: Weather permitting. Construction work will primarily be conducted between 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM, Monday to Saturday

We're listening

Since the project started we've heard from many Lakers, so we’ve made some changes to the detour route:

  • Changed traffic signal timing at 47 Avenue and Cuendet/Herder Drive intersections to improve traffic movements
  • Added more directional signage along the detour route
  • Added more information signs to tell people businesses are open around the construction site
  • Better secured the area to prevent vehicles from making short cuts through private properties
  • Created a more visible and safer pedestrian crossing zone through the construction area

  • Share This project like many others in Sylvan is extremely SLOW to complete. I have driven past on the bypass road during the day and it sure seems like there isn't much happening. There is also some additional planning needed such as the lights at Herder drive and Hi-way 20 which has traffic backed up on Cuendet way due to the increased traffic leaving the area, maybe when items like this are occurring, traffic flow is looked at also. on Facebook Share This project like many others in Sylvan is extremely SLOW to complete. RSPMMS asked 14 days ago

Thank you for your questions, RSPMMS. I know it feels like construction takes a long time. There are many steps the Town of Sylvan Lake takes to ensure the safe and successful completion of a construction project. Planning and coordination began in fall of 2024. For a project this size, construction will take approximately 15 - 17 weeks to complete. Work began July 15, 2025, with an estimated completion date of October 18 – 31, 2025. Work includes:

    • Widening 47 Avenue from 2 lanes to 4
    • New traffic lights at 47 Avenue and Thevanaz intersection
    • New streetlights along 47 Avenue
    • Improving pedestrian access with trails

To make this happen, the Town of Sylvan Lake works with:

    • Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC)
    • ATCO Gas
    • Fortis
    • TELUS
    • Landowners along the corridor
    • Business Owners along the corridor

Sometimes it might look like not much is happening, but some jobs, like pouring concrete, need time to dry and get hard before we can keep working. This can take anywhere from 5 – 7 days depending on the weather and size of concrete. While concrete cures, other items and setup work are being done so the next steps can move forward efficiently. Even with good planning, unexpected issues often come up. During this project, we ran into many problems that can slow things down, such as:

    • Weather
    • Utilities in a location or condition that requires more work
    • Needs of land and business owners

While not all these challenges cause delays, we had a larger number of issues than expected. The biggest being an above average amount of rainfall during the months of July and August. As of today, the project is approximately 1 week behind schedule. This makes the completion closer to November 7, 2025. While that’s disappointing, we’re working on a plan to have the area open to the public early that will still allow us to continue construction in the area.

We have been listening to the concerns of businesses and the public and we’ve been making changes to the detour route:

    • Changed traffic signal timing at 47 Avenue and Cuendet/Herder Drive intersections to improve traffic movements
    • Added more directional signage along the detour route
    • Added more information signs to tell people businesses are open around the construction site
    • Better secured the area to prevent vehicles from making short cuts through private properties
    • Created a more visible and safer pedestrian crossing zone through the construction area

Alberta Transportation and Economic Corridors (TEC) owns and operates the traffic lights at 47 Avenue and Cuendet/Herder Drive. Any changes to the lights are reviewed and approved by TEC. At the Town of Sylvan Lake’s request, TEC has adjusted the timing as much as possible to help improve traffic flow. We ask everyone to drive carefully, follow the signs, and be patient when moving through the construction zone. We are working as quickly and efficiently as possible to finish the project in a way that will last for many years with minimal upkeep and cost.

    Sincerely,
    Eric Boudreau, P.Tech. (Eng.)
    Engineering Services Manager
