Traffic lights vs a roundabout
The Town chose traffic lights instead of a roundabout. A roundabout was less desirable for three main reasons:
Major utility work: There are two Fortis power transformers that would need to be moved, which is a large and expensive job.
Much higher cost: A roundabout could cost up to $2 million more than we planned for, not counting the extra costs for land, lighting, and moving gas and power lines. While we build roundabouts as often as we can, this one would stretch the budget too far. The extra costs of this roundabout would take away money from other planned projects.
Time and business impact: This intersection needs work now. A roundabout would take years to build, while a traffic light is relatively quick to install. Roundabout construction would also be more disruptive to nearby businesses.
In short: traffic lights are quicker, cheaper, and cause less disruption in this case.
