Sylvan Lake has too many people to treat wastewater using lagoons. Because we have grown, the lagoons could not treat our wastewater to meet federal and provincial requirements. As of July 2019, the sewage lagoons no longer treat our wastewater. Instead, sewage is pumped to the Red Deer waste treatment plant.

The old sewage lagoon site must be cleaned up, and the lagoon storage cells reclaimed.

Project benefits

  • Lagoons must be reclaimed to the pre-lagoon stage or repurposed for another suitable use

  • Meet or exceed provincial and federal regulatory requirements

  • Meet the future needs of the town

  • Protect the environment

  • Make sure the reclaimed lagoon storage cells meet or exceed Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (AEPA) requirements

The project includes

  • A snow disposal site is planned for one of the lagoons, cell 7

  • Twice per year groundwater and surface water monitoring program (started 2022)
