Lakeway Landing Storm Pond
Our Environmental Services Department is working on eliminating invasive goldfish that were abandoned in the Lakeway Landing storm pond.
Why?
- Invasive species, such as goldfish, have been introduced into the pond
- Goldfish can have severe and detrimental effects on our native aquatic life and water quality
- The storm water system drains into Sylvan Lake. We hope to prevent goldfish from reaching the lake and damaging our fishing tourism industry
How?

- Phase 1 2023, completed:
- Cleared overgrowth
- Pumped the pond down while netting goldfish from a boat
- After the frost set in, we removed sludge and slit, including any remaining goldfish eggs
- This work greatly reduced the number of goldfish in the pond, however many remained and were visible after spring thaw 2024
- We proceeded with this phase due to a supply chain disruption that made Rotenone unavailable in 2023

Legacy People asked 2 months agoHello Legacy People,
We are addressing the landscaping in the Lakeway Landing park around the storm pond once the goldfish removal is complete. That depends on the progress and success of the Rotenone treatment. Stay tuned to this project page for updates and details about the Rotenone treatment.
Once the Rotenone treatment is complete, the Parks Department will finish up by:
- Touching up the landscaping
- Planting some new trees to keep the park looking pleasing
- We are not replacing the viewing platform
Hope that helps to answer your questions!
Sincerely,
Ron Lebsack, Director of Parks & Protective Services -

AlbertasBeef asked about 2 months agoHello AlbertasBeef,
Thanks for reaching out! There are two reasons why we can’t use clove oil.
Clove oil is for individual aquarium fish
Clove oil is used to euthanize individual fish in an aquarium setting, not on an ecosystem level. A dose needed to be lethal in the Lakeway Landing storm pond would be about 280 liters. Pouring that much oil into a tiny body of water would damage the pond’s whole ecosystem, not just animals with gills. You can read more about the regular use of clove oil here.
Clove oil is not approved
We can only use pesticides approved by the Government of Canada and the Province of Alberta. They do not permit using clove oil as a pesticide. Rotenone is approved because it breaks down quickly and only targets creatures with gills. It does not damage the ecosystem’s plants or other animals.
So, clove oil is not an option for removing fish from outdoor water bodies. Even though clove oil is not a workable solution, we really appreciate your suggestion. It shows you care about our environment and our community. Please feel free to ask anything else!
Sincerely,
Monique Johnson,

Legacy People asked 2 months agoDear Legacy People,
The Province of Alberta monitors the lake. But we do ask Lakers to keep their eye out for invasive species. Anyone who sees an invasive in the lake should call the AIS hotline right away, 1 855 336 BOAT (2628). We really appreciate Lakers like you who care and who take the time to learn about our community. I hope this answers your question!
Sincerely,
Monique Johnson,

Legacy People asked 2 months agoHello Legacy People,
Thanks for reaching out. The budget is available here in the news feed of the project web page. Keep in mind that the more affordable Rotenone treatment was not available before spring of 2024. If it was available, we would not have used manual removal techniques.
Sincerely,
Monique Johnson,

Legacy People asked 2 months agoHello Legacy People,
Town staff will monitor the success of the Rotenone following the treatment. We also regularly monitor all year round as part of our regular stormwater system monitoring.
Make sure to check out:
- The project phases on the engage web page, where you’ll find the project schedule, including monitoring
- The All About Rotenone information news post, where you can learn about why Rotenone is a trusted solution for invasive species

Legacy People asked 2 months agoHello Legacy People,
You can find the timeline on this web page by scrolling down to Project Phases. If you are on a desktop computer, the phases are on the right hand side of the screen. There, you’ll find a detailed list of each step in the project along with the estimated dates. Please keep in mind that dates may change as we may encounter unexpected hiccups or weather conditions that may cause delays. If the dates change, we update them in the project phases.
You are more than welcome to ask more questions as they come up. Thanks for reaching out!

Paul Pedersen asked 7 months agoHello Paul,
Thanks for taking the time to connect with us. We are monitoring the pond. The numbers of goldfish are greatly reduced, but they are not gone.
Completed so far:
- Drained the pond
- Removed goldfish and eggs in dirt/vegetation to reduce goldfish numbers
- Monitored the pond and planned for the next stages of removal
Next steps:
- Explore more ways to remove the invasive goldfish, such as electrofishing
- Let Lakers know the next steps on this web page
Why are we using multiple removal techniques?
Normally, rotenone would be used. The application only takes a few weeks to complete and monitor. No construction would be needed.
Unfortunately, there is a supply chain interruption. We don't know when it will become available. Without this tool, we must use other methods of removal to reduce populations of goldfish.
Thanks for taking interest in the project. If you need more information, please feel free to ask another question.
