This long-term project investigates and corrects the root causes of the roadway issues along Herder Drive and in Hewlett Park. The issues included:

  • Pot holes
  • Road heaves
  • Higher than normal water levels


The investigation revealed the problems that were causing the poor conditions on Herder Drive:

  1. At the Erickson Drive storm water crossing: This drainage route was too small and created a bottle neck

  2. Along the drainage channels from Erickson Drive to Hewlett Park: The drainage channel was too flat. Water was standing instead of draining away

  3. At the storm water mains within the roadways of Hewlett Park: The mains were too shallow and were too small to allow enough drainage

  4. With groundwater conditions in the area: Because of 1 - 3, the water had nowhere to drain

How?

  • First, we corrected the problems causing poor conditions (1 - 3 above)

  • Next we repaired Hunter Road and Hinshaw Drive

  • Work continues to repair Herder Drive and then Harrison Road

  • Many projects were coordinated at the same time to maximize efficiency


What?

We improved surface and ground water drainage so that water moves from west to east, away from Hewlett Park. Improvements include:

  • Added the Hampton Pointe storm water lift station and new Hampton Pointe outfall
    New Hampton Pointe storm water lift station

  • Regrading of drainage ditches and storm ponds

  • Added two large concrete box culverts at the Erickson Drive storm water crossing. The new culverts eliminate the bottleneck at the Erickson Drive storm water crossing. The old culverts were about 60 cm in diameter. The new box culverts are 1.6 meters tall and 2.9 meters wide

Improved roadways:

  • Stronger road structure
  • Safer roadway for driving
  • Improved sightlines for pedestrians to cross roadway safely

  • Removal, replacement and upgrading the existing storm water mains

  • Installation of weeping tile drains along the roadway

  • Removal of concrete in areas where the ground settled, and the surface water is not draining properly

  • Removal and replacement of the asphalt roadway

  • Addition of traffic calming measures

    Thank you for your question!  

    The portion near Heenan Crescent to Harrison Road is scheduled for the next phase of the Herder Drive rehabilitationCouncil and administration have not confirmed when the next phase of construction will take placeIt’s been tentatively scheduled to take place within the next 3 years. This work is included in our 10-year capital plan. Before we can schedule the work, we must first investigate the site. Then we can create a design for the construction. We work backwards from there to figure out dates.  

    During construction vehicles won’t have access to the roadway in front of their homes. The Town will ensure a safe and reliable pedestrian trail will be made available for everyone to access their property from the front. During construction, vehicles must park on a neighboring public road. That will allow the Town to fix the roadway and the underground infrastructure as efficiently and as quickly as possible. 

    We understand that construction and losing parking is frustrating. But it will be worth the returns after these much-needed repairs are completed. During construction, we thank our amazing Lakers for showing extra kindness and making room for neighbours to park wherever possible.

    Hi Jenn,
    We are paving the entire roadway well past any manholes so vehicles can use the roadway with greater ease. This section of paving is scheduled to be finished on Friday, August 4.

Detour options required residents to go all the way around to 47th Ave in order to access Hwy 11 which caused significant delays. Buses without access points forced children to walk significant distances from designated stops. My question is, has any consideration been put forth into providing better detour options when this project starts this year?     Hi Chelsea,

    Last year, a significant amount of work was carried out on Herder Drive, including:

    • intersection storm tie-ins
    • lowering the storm line under powerlines 
    • excavations along Herder for the installation of a storm line


    This year, there is much less work to complete and includes: 

    • concrete work
    • milling
    • paving


    This year's work can be completed within a week's time, taking advantage of school closures. Despite the reduced scope of work, we are still working hard to improve road closures and minimize disruptions.
