The Town is building a roundabout at Memorial Trail and 50 Street. The roundabout upgrade:

  • Improves traffic flow: Smoother and faster movement of vehicles through the intersection, reducing delays and congestion
  • Enhances safety for all users: Lowers the risk of collisions by providing a more controlled and predictable traffic pattern
  • Grows with the Town: Ensures that the intersection can accommodate increased traffic

Why now?

The intersection is nearing capacity limits and needs upgrading as soon as possible. The Town is planning now:

  • To avoid delays: Starting the design of the roundabout so the Town is “shovel ready” when funding is secured
  • For future growth: The upgrade prepares the intersection for community growth including:
    • New developments along the Memorial Trail corridor
    • Increasing traffic along 50 Street during peak tourist season
    • Population growth

When

Stage 1: One lane roundabout

  • One lane roundabout designed to expand into 2 lane easily. This allows expenses to be spread over more time
  • Stage one includes an optional pathway that extends along 50 Street from Beacon Hill Drive to Memorial Trail. Completing the pathway depends on the available budget and may be implemented as a separate project in future
  • Stage one does not change any existing driveway access to 50 Street and Memorial Trail
  • The Roundabout project is planned alongside the 50 Street redevelopment project.
  • Phase 1a: Preliminary Design and Engagement (May - Sep 2025)
    • Status: Underway
  • Phase 1b: Detailed Design & Tender Package (TBD)
    • Status: Planning
  • Phase 2: Construction (2028)
    • Roundabout at 50 Street and Memorial Trail
    • Status: Planning

Stage 2: Two-lane roundabout

    Why a roundabout?

    • A roundabout is the safest solution because it drastically reduces conflict points, or spots where collisions happen between vehicles, and between vehicles and pedestrians/cyclists
    • Roundabouts slow traffic down and reduce the possibility of high-speed t-bone accidents
    • Slower speed accidents cause less death and harm than highway speed accidents
