This page will teach you about your water supply and what we are doing to protect it. We appreciate the work Lakers do to learn about our water system, and to ask questions. Let's talk!

This page includes:

  1. Your Water brochure: To understand how we all work together to protect our water, you must first understand little bit about our local geology and the water cycle. The brochure is about our water supply and what we are doing to protect it
  2. Water planning: Our Water Master Plan found maintenance and upgrades needed for water sustainability
  3. Water projects: How we are completing the work in our Water Master Plan. These projects provide water today and plan for the future. The projects also protect our aquifer and prevent it from becoming damaged
  4. Budget: Estimated cost of the Sustainable Water Project. Grants we applied for to reduce the cost
  5. Water conservation and restriction: Conservation and restrictions are not the same thing, but both work to protect our water supply. Page 6 - 19 of the Your Water brochure explains the difference between conservation and restrictions. The Water Conservation and Demand Management Measurements Policy explains how the Town protects the water supply. The policy outlines conservation (stage 1) to what happens during actual water shortages (stage 2 and 3) that result in restrictions

So I understand about water conservation but what is the town doing about ensuring that lake visitors are also conserving water from the taps or is that coming from and going back to the lake?

    Royle asked 3 days ago

    Hi Royle,

Thanks for reaching out; that is a great question. The taps in the lakeshore washroom are water-saving. Sensor taps reduce water usage anywhere from 30% to 60% compared to traditional taps. Water is saved by the automatic shut-off, reduced flow rates, and the way people tend to use the taps.

The outdoor showers also have water-saving timer buttons. The buttons automatically shut off and save a lot of water.

All the water in Sylvan Lake’s water system comes from groundwater. Groundwater comes from aquifers, and surface water comes from water bodies such as lakes and rivers. Please read pages 4 – 5 of the Your Water brochure to learn about groundwater and surface water.

    Sincerely,
    The Town of Sylvan Lake
