On August 26, 2024, Council approved the first reading of the Off-Highway Vehicle Bylaw 1904-2024 (page 31). Council directed Administration to engage Lakers and get their feedback.

About the new bylaw

  • In effect December 1 - March 31 every year
  • On Town of Sylvan Lake Roads only, does NOT include Highway 20
  • Must have valid vehicle registration and insurance
  • Travel by the most direct route between their residence and an access point for the lake
  • Maximum speed of 40 kilometers per hour
  • Travel in the same direction as vehicles on the road
  • Travel in single file
  • Display a valid licence plate properly attached to the off-highway vehicle

Will there be regular checkstops at the access points to ensure OHVs are compliant with mufflers as stated in the Bylaw?     Hello Sanregre, 

    Thanks for submitting a question! No, we don’t have plans for check stops. However, the muffler requirements stated in the bylaw do give Municipal Enforcement a tool to enforce noise complaints. As always, enforcement responds to complaints as they come in, so submit your complaints online here, or call 403 858 7280 and leave a message.

    These thoughtful questions show you are considering the well-being of our community and the quality of life of our residents. We can’t answer your questions yet, because the survey is intended to capture feedback like this. Once the survey closes, your feedback will be presented to Council for consideration. We’ll also post the survey results report displayed on this web page. For this reason, it’s important to submit the above through the survey in addition to asking here. 

    I know this probably isn’t as clear an answer as you were hoping for. But remember, the process of creating bylaws allows for Council to request changes and this is an important part of that process.

    Hi Kathy, 

    We agree that permitted times of day are an important component of the new bylaw. That’s why the survey asks for your preferred morning start time, and evening end time.
