Help us conserve Sylvan Lake's heritage by participating in building our Heritage Management Plan. This project is made possible by the support of the Government of Alberta Heritage Partnership Preservation Program.

What?

The Town of Sylvan Lake is developing a Heritage Management Plan, with the help of Sylvan Lake Archives. The project will inventory, document, and celebrate Sylvan Lake’s heritage assets while planning for ongoing conservation.

When?

This project will be undertaken in 3 phases:

  • Phase 1: Municipal Heritage Survey - Identification of a list of places of historic interest throughout Sylvan Lake
  • Phase 2: Heritage Asset Inventory - Selection of sites from the list that may warrant conservation under the Alberta Historical Resources Act, and additional research and work to document them
  • Phase 3: Heritage Management Plan - Production of a Plan to guide the management of tangible heritage (buildings and landscapes) and intangible heritage (important events, traditions, and cultural activities). The Plan will guide decision-making across relevant Town portfolios, including Recreation, Culture & Tourism and Planning & Development.

We’re starting with a Municipal Heritage Survey, which will result in a database of information identifying the historical buildings, structures and sites in Sylvan Lake.

The Municipal Heritage Survey will also include a Historic Context Statement for our town, which will identify the key themes, events, eras and development trends that have shaped our community over its history.

This phase will lay the groundwork for Phases 2 and 3, where specific historical buildings, structures and sites may be identified for protection under the future Heritage Management Plan.

Why?

  • Conserves Sylvan Lake’s rich cultural heritage
  • Celebrates both our tangible heritage (historical buildings, landscapes and sites) and our intangible heritage (cultural practices, traditions, events and stories)
  • Builds community pride
  • Promotes cultural tourism
  • Ensures that Sylvan Lake’s unique heritage thrives alongside development and change

Participate

Help us develop the Historic Context Statement and Municipal Heritage Survey! At this time, we are only compiling an understanding of Sylvan Lake’s historical buildings, landscapes and stories. Future phases of engagement will address the protection of historic resources and development of the Heritage Management Plan.

  • Survey: Take the survey, until February 28, 2025
