The Town is beginning to plan for another section of 50 Street redevelopment from Memorial Trail to Perry Drive. No construction is included at this stage. The upgrade:

  • Improves traffic flow: Smoother movement of vehicles along 50 Street
  • Enhances safety for all users: improves sidewalk/pathway access for pedestrians
  • Grows with the Town: Ensures that 50 Street can accommodate increased traffic

Why plan now?

To save money, this project is being planned alongside the 50th Street and Memorial Trail roundabout project. Because this section of 50th Street connects with the roundabout, it will save money to do the design and feedback for both at the same time. While we are doing very early-stage planning and feedback now, this section of 50th Street construction will not start for many years.

  • To avoid delays: Starting the design of the section of 50 Street so the Town is “shovel ready” when funding is secured
  • For future growth: The upgrade prepares the intersection for community growth including:
    • New developments along the 50 Street corridor
    • Increasing traffic along 50 Street during peak tourist season
    • Population growth

When

Stage 1: Preliminary planning

  • Preliminary planning is completed alongside the Stage I Memorial Trail Roundabout project
  • Phase 1a: Preliminary Design and Engagement (May - Sep 2025)

Stage 2: Widening 50 Street

  • This stage is completed alongside the Stage 2 Memorial Trail Roundabout project
  • No estimated start date: Start budgeting for construction once growth demands 4 lanes to accommodate increased traffic
  • Widening of Memorial Trail and 50 Street to 4 lanes (from Memorial Trail to Perry Drive)
  • A two-way turn lane is proposed from Beacon Hill Drive to Cole Way to maintain all turns access for existing intersections and driveways
  • There are two options for 50 Street near the Lakeview Cemetery to include 4 lanes with a sidewalk, or 4 lanes with a pathway

Are you taking down the big trees along 50th Street to widen the road?

Rinda asked about 1 month ago

    Hi Rinda,

Thanks for your question. You did not specify which trees you are talking about. We are guessing you mean the spruce trees along the cemetery.

Trees on 50 Street between Pelican Place and Perry Drive

    • We feel we should be able to save those trees. However, we have not started designing this project yet

    • It will depend on how wide the road must be, which will not be decided until the detailed design phase. That phase is not active and has no estimated start date.

Trees on 50 Street between Memorial Trail and Highway 11

    • Unfortunately, in this section there will be some tree removal. This is because of the proposed footprint and grading requirements of the roundabout.

    • Tree removal is anticipated in the southwest and southeast of the roundabout.

    Planning

The Town of Sylvan Lake plans long in advance for major construction projects on our roadways. These plans include:

    • Evaluates the road network, now and in the future

    • Provides a framework for Council and Administration to assess the capability of our roads to accommodate new development in the short- and long-term

    • Recommendations for the future needs of the Memorial Trail corridor

    • Memorial Trail Biophysical Impact Assessment

    • Studying how the construction impacts the natural area around the roadway

    • This study will be completed as part of the design phase, which has not started yet

Get your thoughts presented to Council

If you haven’t already, complete the 50 Street and Memorial Trail Roundabout Survey. That's the best way to make sure your feedback is included when the survey results are presented to CouncilIf you have another question, ask here.

Will the redevelopment include a bike lane for bike/scooter use?

Byronrogy asked about 1 month ago

    Hi Byronrogy,

Thanks for your question. This redevelopment doesn’t include a bike lane as a portion of the roadway. In stage 1 of the 50 Street and Memorial Trail Roundabout projecta new multi-use pathway along the west side 50 Street (between Beacon Hill Drive and Memorial Trail) is an option and is not funded at this time. Completing the pathway depends on the available budget and may be implemented as a separate project in future.

Make sure to complete the survey if you haven't already. That's the best way to make sure your feedback is included when the survey results are presented to Council. Visit the 50 Street and Memorial Trail Roundabout page to take the survey.

    Sincerely,
    David Yee
