2026 Lakefront Improvements and Enhancements
In the fall of 2025, the Town of Sylvan Lake launched a Laker Feedback Survey. The survey asked Lakers a variety of questions including, but not limited to:
- Satisfaction levels with department services
- Communication experiences with the Town
- Important issues for Council
Lakers were invited to share additional thoughts at the end of the survey. One resounding issue consistent amongst survey respondents was the importance of maintaining a positive experience in Sylvan Lake, including the health and well-being of the lakefront.
Residents also expressed concerns regarding summer crowds at the lake. Specific issues included garbage, tent use, noise levels, washroom cleanliness, dogs on beaches, and how rules are followed.
During 2026 budget planning, Council Members utilized this feedback as the foundation for several improvements along Sylvan Lake’s beach front. As part of this process, Council directed administration to make the following changes:
- Four (4) additional seasonal bylaw officers, focused on enforcement and writing tickets
- Five (5) additional parks staff (1 full time, 4 part time) to handle garbage collection, washroom cleaning, and general lakefront maintenance
- Increases to pay parking: $50/day, $5 per hour; this included expanded parking areas in the downtown
- Increased garbage capacity along the waterfront, complimenting additional staff to ensure more consistent garbage collection
Additional Lakefront Improvements
- Additional garbage cans have been purchased and added to the lakefront area. Staff operations have been changed to keep more staff in the area to empty garbage cans to prevent overflows. If you notice an issue please report it on the Town's website.
Washroom Improvements
- Laker feedback included washroom cleanliness and staff presence. As a result, renovations have been completed to add space for more supplies to be stored on site, which will allow staff to service the washrooms without leaving the area for additional supplies.
- Planning is underway for additional washrooms in Centennial Park. Work will be done to prepare the site in 2026, with anticipated construction in 2027.
To accompany the increases to ensuring the health and well-being of the lakefront, Council also directed administration to amend both the Parks Bylaw and the Smoke Free Bylaw. These changes included:
Parks Bylaw (effective as of May 26, 2026)
- Tents are no longer permitted along the lakefront, including Lighthouse Park, Lakefront Park, Centennial Park, and the Pier; only single-pole umbrellas or small child shade structures are permitted
- Canopy structures are restricted to a designated area in Centennial Park
- A 12-foot zone on the south side of the lakeshore sidewalk between 42 Street and 40 Street, identified as the Centennial Park Canopy Zone
- No shade structures are permitted overnight in Centennial Park, between 11:00 PM and 6:00 PM; exceptions may be approved through a special event permit
Smoke Free Bylaw (effective as of February 24, 2026)
- Redefined ‘Lakefront No Smoking Zone’; smoking is not allowed on a sidewalk along Lakeshore Drive from 34 Street through to 53 Street AND Centennial Street from Lakeshore Drive through to 50 Avenue, between the hours of 8:00 AM – 8:00 PM
These changes were brought forth based on the feedback of residents, both from the survey and from various interactions with Council leading up to the spring and summer season. These initiatives will be reviewed in the fall of 2026 to ensure they’re leading to the intended improvements to the lakefront while maintaining a healthy and accessible experience for everyone enjoying Sylvan Lake.
