How can we get involved?

We have many opportunities for Lakers and businesses to engage with the project.

    1. In person meetings with downtown businesses, property owners, and residents

    2. We'll post any new opportunities to give feedback and participate here

    What is the project?

The Centennial Street Redevelopment Project will revitalize the downtown corridor with new and improved sidewalks, roads, and area to improve the year-round experience for our overall community.

Why do we need this project?

The Centennial Development Project aims to replace old infrastructure, including roads, storm systems, and utilities, which have reached the end of their lifespan. By upgrading landscaping and sidewalks at the same time, we can save money, minimize disruption, and create a more welcoming and vibrant community space.

    When will the construction start/end?

Work from just east of 50 Avenue to 49 Avenue will be completed first. (before July)

Work on Centennial Street and 50 Avenue intersection will be completed in September and October.

    Who pays for the project?

The project is paid for by capital funds from the capital budget.

    Will my taxes increase?

    • Funding for capital projects like Centennial Street modernization is funded in part by property taxes
    • In the annual resident priority setting survey, Sylvan Lake residents choose to increase taxes by inflation to maintain services
    • Council works to make sure your municipal taxes do not go over the current inflation rate. That includes funding for projects like Centennial Street

How are you helping local businesses during construction?

Businesses will receive regular updates on the project's timeline, scope, and anticipated disruptions to help them plan accordingly:

    • We'll ensure that access to businesses is maintained throughout the project, including clear signage to guide customers and delivery services.
    • Construction activities will be scheduled to minimize impact during peak business hours, reducing noise and disruption when businesses are busiest.
    • Efforts will be made to ensure parking availability and access, with designated areas for both during construction.
    • We'll work closely with local business associations and owners to address concerns and provide additional support, like marketing initiatives to attract customers despite construction.

These measures are intended to minimize the impact on local businesses while revitalizing the downtown area, ultimately creating a more vibrant and thriving community space.

How will customers be able to access my business during construction?

We are connecting businesses with supports so that they can create a construction marking and communication plan. Each business knows their own customers best. We hope that through the supports provided businesses can create and effective strategy to be successful during construction.

Directional signs will be posted throughout the construction area to guide customers to business entrances. Signs will be visible and updated regularly to reflect changes in construction zones.

    Customer-friendly construction

    • Safe pedestrian walkways during construction
    • Brief interruptions to opening hours are needed to reconstruct sidewalks
      • Advance notice is given when we are doing construction of sidewalks
      • When it does not create cost increases in the project, we attempt to schedule sidewalk construction outside of business hours

How are you keeping downtown disruptions to a minimum?

See Reducing Construction Impacts on the Centennial Street project page.

Who is the contractor doing the work?

How will communication be handled during construction phase?

Regular updates through various channels, including email,, social media, and Engage Sylvan Lake and town websites, to keep everyone informed about the construction progress, upcoming activities, and any changes to the schedule.

Most communication will go out through the Centennial Street project page.

We are also communicating directly with project partners impacted by the construction:

    • Residents
    • Businesses
    • Organizations
    • Property owners

    Will parking be affected?

Yes. Parking will be limited inside construction zones.

Will my water/sewer/power services be affected?

Yes. During certain stages of construction, we must shut down services to complete the work. We have planned to minimize outages, and will bring in temporary water/sewer supply wherever possible. The Town will give advance notice before any outage.

Fortis manages power and they give advance notice of any outages.

Will the front of my building be affected?

No. The face of buildings is not part of construction. Every effort is made to avoid damage to 50 Street buildings during construction. Before construction begins, we photo and video document each building. If damage is caused by construction, the Town will repair the damage.
