  • Share Just wondering if there have been any ideas about what to do with the "Chinese Junk" It is really cool, and after reading the history of the piece, its even cooler ! The fact that a local business owner actually handmade the boat, and donated it to the town, makes it valuable. Too valuable to just sit and rot, in the maintenance yard. I, along with many others spent many fun filled evenings at Gary's Family restaurant & Lounge. Here is an idea I had...Pierview is the only subdivision that doesn't have a big sign ! I have lived here for 14 years, and have always wondered why that is? Did the developer just not want the expense? In any case, I think the green space right to the south of FasGas would be a perfect spot ! Someone a few years back planted 4 trees ? and some flowers there. But then, no one maintained the flower garden, so, now it just gets mowed :( I think some sort of rock garden with a few shrubs ....and a WELCOME TO PIERVIEW sign, with the chinese junk as its centerpiece would be fantastic ! Just my two cents ! Pierview needs a sign, and that sweet little boat needs a home. Hi DML!

We are happy to hear about your interest in the Chinese Junk! We welcome input from the community. As you know, we temporarily relocated it due to the construction taking place at the 50 Avenue and 50 Street intersection. We will consider your suggestion when we discuss how we can best use this piece of Sylvan Lake history in the future.

Will the issue of traffic calming on 50th ave be addressed

kathy asked about 1 year ago

    Hi Kathy,

The Town installed traffic calming measures from Lakeshore Drive to 45 Street:

    • Curb bulb outs at intersections
    • Trees planted along both sides of the roadway
    • Increased visibility of speed limit signs
    • Increased number of speed limit signs
    • Speed radar sign to alert drivers when their speed is getting too high

We are installing similar measures along 50 Avenue from 45 Street to 50 Street. For details, check out the "Roadway Modernization and Traffic Calming Design" section of the 50 Avenue Redevelopment page.

    Hi Norene,

The area is under construction during this time. The concrete for the sidewalks won't be completed so the sidewalks aren't ready yet. We are making sure people can move through the area, but we ask everyone to do so with caution.

Will 50th Avenue between 46 Street and Centennial street be open after Phase 3 is finished in August?

Norene Reaume asked over 1 year ago

    Hi Noreen,

That's a great question! Here's what to expect along Phase 3 of 50 Avenue after August 2023:

    • After we install the underground utilities, 50 Avenue partially opens to traffic

    • The road stays as gravel while we continue constructing concrete, street lighting, and landscaping

    • There will be occasional road closures and limited parking around the construction areas

    • After the concrete work is complete, we close the road for the first layer of asphalt paving from Dairy Queen to 49 Street

We updated the project phases with new dates, so you can check there as well for more details.

  • Share Hi I'm wondering what will be happening with the redevelopment project in September. Will there still be construction going then with detours and blocked off areas up to 49th Street? If it is still ongoing, do they work weekends, making dust and noise? Will the road from 46th to Centennial Street be open for traffic from September 1 until the final phase in 2024? Norene Reaume asked over 1 year ago

    Hi Norene,

September construction requires detours along 50 Avenue after September 1. Here’s what’s next:

    • We are opening the road temporarily with a gravel surface as the underground crews continue west towards Centennial St. The road opens September 1, before the Labor Day long weekend
    • We must bring back the detours and road closures for the week of September 18 so we can build the concrete curbs, sidewalks, asphalt pavement, and landscaping
    • We anticipate opening the roadway for traffic by mid-October, as long as weather cooperates
    • Normally, construction crews work Monday – Friday. Crews only work the occasional weekend as needed. For example, we would work weekends if there are too many delays caused by weather or construction problems. Weekend work:
      • Helps bring the schedule back on track, or
      • Reduces impacts. For example, the medical center is closed on the weekend so working in their area on weekends is better

Sylvanlaker asked over 1 year ago

    Hi Sylvanlaker,

For now, the intersection will remain a 4-way stop. We do our best to spread the cost of these big projects out over several years, so we are planning to install the traffic lights in 2026.

As part of the July/August 2023 construction in the intersection, we’re installing the underground infrastructure and pole bases needed to have the intersection signalized. Doing the work now:

    • Creates less of a disturbance during 2023's construction

    • Saves the town money as we don't have to dig anything up in the future

    • Allows for the lights to be installed more efficiently with less disturbance to the intersection in 2026
